wow look at how beautiful this Black Megalodon is ! I found it the day after Kobe Bryant passed away and named it after him ! It takes dedication and persistence to find treasuresalot of the time. The amount of amazing fossils we are finding near Hilton Head are really mind blowing ! We even found a Devils toenail ! thats a ancient Oyster that is from 120-250 million years old ! so amazing !
What an amazing way to ring in the new year ! The Hurley family‘s first fossil hunting trip ! The massive Meg’s were monster Sharks. The first showed up about 20 million years ago, (Carchadon megalodon) was what we think was the largest meat eating fish that ever lived ! Scientists can guess the sharks size by the size of the teeth and spine. These massive sharks were estimated to grow up to 45-60 feet long! and weigh up to 50 to 70 tons ! With 46 rows of teeth and a mouth up to seven feet wide they must have had one heck of a bite ! It is believed that the Megladons breeding ground was in our own South Carolina waters ! Hilton Head Island‘s local waterways offers some of the best sharks tooth hunting in the world! Cant wait for the next trip !
The cooling temperatures of fall are approaching and The fishing is really heating up. Giant schools of huge red fish are moving off shore for the winter season. It’s a great time to catch these beautiful creatures on light tackle or fly rod. After big rains or tides is our favorite time to get out and explore our shell and fossil hunting areas! Hurricane Dorian was no joke, the rains and weather really did some damage. we have been having some amazing treasure hunts ! The sharks teeth hunting , shelling and Beach combing trips really bring back a lot of memories form my childhood here on Hilton Head Island . being a native and growing up only a few hundred yards form the beach . Iwa always in the sand dunes and tidal pools with my cocker spaniel “Scooter”. In the days before the beach renurishment we would find lots of shells and teeth . It was one of our favorite things to do as children of Hilton Head . What a Fried Combo Platter! first trip today i had the pleasure of guiding 18 year old "SEA BASS", He scored choke sharks teeth , watched Manta rays sky rocket ,had a dolphin encounter we will never forget. Caught ,released and learned about sharks, then sight fished a and released a 25 pound Cobia.That was a three hour "Day With A Native trip."! Ten minutes later Captain Cory Cunningham jumped on and we had some fun with the Ultra light fly rod and ultra strong fish.! Cobia and Triple tail. FIRST I HAVE SUCH AMAZING EYESIGHT THAT I CAN HUNT IN DAYLIGHT OR NIGHT.
SECOND I CAN MOVE WITH LIGHTENING SPEED FROM A STATUE STILL POSITION, IMPALING A FISH OR WHIP SNAPPING A SNAKE BEFORE IT EVEN KNOWS IT HAS BEEN PLUCKED FROM THE BRUSH. IT'S A SIGHT TO BEHOLD. NO, REALLY.
THIRD I AM AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY HUNTER! ON LAND OR WATER, SALT OR FRESH, MATTERS NOT TO ME. COME FOR A NATURE TOUR WITH CAPT. BYRON OR CAPT. CORY AND YOU'LL OBSERVE ME ENJOYING BOTH THE SURF AND THE TURF BUFFET.
I FEAST ON MICE, LIZARDS, BUGS, FROGS, CRABS, SHRIMP, SNAILS AND SNAKES, NOT TO MENTION OTHER SMALL BIRDS! I CAN STAB, PLUCK, SNAP, WHIP, SHAKE AND THROW MY PREY ON THE GROUND AS MANY TIMES AS IT TAKES BEFORE SAVORING THE FRESHEST OF FARES.
HOWEVER; THERE IS ONE DOWNSIDE. I MUST CONFESS THAT ONCE IN A WHILE ONE OF MY KIND TRIES TO SWALLOW A FISH THAT IS TOO BIG. IT CAN GET STUCK IN OUR LONG NECKS AND CHOKE US TO DEATH. SOO EMBARRASSING.. BUT..
BACK TO ME ! I AM A BIG BIRD, REACHING FOUR FEET HIGH WITH A SIX FOOT WINGSPAN. HOWEVER, LIKE ALL BIRDS, MY BONES ARE HOLLOW, SO I ONLY WEIGH FIVE TO SIX POUNDS. APPARENTLY, THIS WORKS OUT WELL BECAUSE I CAN LIVE UP TO FIFTEEN TO TWENTY YEARS.. NOT BAD FOR A BIRD.
NOW FOR MY FAVORITE PART: MATING
I DEFINITELY HAVE THE DATING RITUAL DOWN! ALL I HAVE TO DO IS PICK A SAFE, STRONG NESTING SITE AT LEAST 100 FEET UP, THEN HANG OUT THERE AND THROW MY S-SHAPED NECK ALL THE WAY BACK SEVERAL TIMES. THE FEMALES CAN'T RESIST. I CHOOSE ONE TO PRESENT GIFTS OF NESTING MATERIALS AND SHE BEGINS AN INTRICATE WEAVING PROCESS. SOON 2-6 PALE BLUE EGGS ARE LAID IN THE NEST. NOT ONLY DO I TAKE TURNS KEEPING THEM COVERED UNTIL HATCHED, I ALSO SHARE FEEDING DUTIES, ALL THE TIME KEEPING PREDATORS AWAY..
WE HAVE HUNDREDS OF NEIGHBORS, 4-5 HUNDRED IN OUR HERONRY( LIKE NURSERY FOR YOU HUMANS). YOU SHOULD HEAR THE RACKET WE CAN MAKE WHEN A HAWK OR AN EAGLE COMES NEAR..IMAGINE HUNDREDS OF LOUD "BRRRAACCKKKING" NOISES. I GUARD MY NEST AND MY EATING TERRITORIES PROUDLY AND LOUDLY.
